"On April 15, 1942, a Board of Army Air Force Officers, being favorably impressed with an air field site just northeast of Walnut Ridge, recommended it be substituted for the site near Dyersburg, Tenn., which Washington had rejected due to the amount of earthwork required," states Walnut Ridge's Wings of Honor Museum website. Construction work on the Walnut Ridge Army Air Field would begin on June 20, 1942.
